How to Play Trivia Challenge Over Text
- Decide on a format before you start. You can alternate asking questions, pick a quiz master, or each prepare 5 questions in advance.
- The question-asker texts a trivia question. It can be multiple choice or open-ended — just make sure you actually know the answer yourself.
- The other player answers honestly without Googling. The honor system is everything here. No sneaky tab-switching.
- Reveal the correct answer, award a point for correct responses, and swap roles. First to 10 points wins, or play as many rounds as you want.
Rules
- No Googling, no Siri, no "let me just check real quick." Pure brainpower only.
- The question-asker must know the correct answer before asking. No making things up.
- Accept close-enough answers. If someone says "like 1969" for the moon landing, that counts.
- Keep questions fair. Don't ask hyper-specific questions only you would know unless you're both into that topic.
- If you're playing multiple choice, always include 3-4 options to keep it interesting.
Example Conversation
You
Trivia time! What planet has the most moons in our solar system?
Them
Jupiter?
You
Nope! It's actually Saturn now. They found a bunch more recently. 146 and counting
Them
What?? Ok that feels unfair but I'll take the L. My turn
Them
What country has the most time zones?
You
Russia? They're massive
Them
It's France! They have territories all over the world so they cover like 12 time zones 🇫🇷
You
Ok I did NOT know that. 1-1 let's keep going
Tips & Variations
- Try themed rounds — one round of geography, one of pop culture, one of science. It keeps things fresh and gives everyone a chance to shine.
- Play "Speed Trivia" where the answerer has only 60 seconds to respond. Add a timer emoji for dramatic effect.
- In a group chat, let everyone answer the same question. First correct answer gets the point.
- Prepare questions in advance from trivia websites or apps so you always have good ones ready. Improvised questions tend to be either too easy or impossibly hard.
